Public Hearing on First Voluntary National Review on Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals

The National Assembly house hosted a public hearing on the First Voluntary National Review on the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, organized by the Foreign Affairs Committee.


In his opening address, National Assembly Deputy Speaker Djordje Milicevic said that the UN 2030 Agenda for the Sustainable Development is very important for the people of Serbia, highlighting the National Assembly’s cooperation with the Government and civil society organizations toward achieving this goal. Milicevic said that the National Assembly’s role is to pass legislation and secure budgeting for the activities related to the implementation and supervision of SDGs. The informal Focus Group for the Development of Control Mechanisms for the Process of Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals was formed to harmonize the National Assembly’s activities in the area and 10 National Assembly committees are monitoring the ministries’ efficiency in meeting the Goals, said Deputy Speaker Milicevic. He added that the Assembly fully cooperates with the Inter-Ministerial Working Group for the Implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which he is sure will contribute to a successful implementation of SDGs in Serbia.

Foreign Affairs Committee Deputy Chairperson Dubravka Filipovski said that the realization of the 2030 Agenda via the three SDG pillars - economic, social and environmental, should help eradicate poverty, create a world based on sustainable development and forge a better future for the people of Serbia. Filipovski said that the 2019 budget contains funds ear-marked fort the Inter-Ministerial Working Group for the Implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the fiscal policy has been adjusted to the national SDGs. She said that it is important that the institutions cooperate in the implementation of SDGs, to put the local self-governments in charge of the Goals and related activities and include more young people in the SDG efforts.

Serbian Minister without portfolio in charge of population policy and Head of the Inter-Ministerial Working Group for the Implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Slavica Djukic Dejanovic said that the review was drafted in accordance with UN guidelines and will be presented on 17 July in the UN headquarters in New York. The Review contains a detailed description of the process and degree of implementation of all 17 SDGs, with a special focus on the six marked as priorities by the Government. Djukic Dejanovic added that the local self-governments and young people will be a key partner in the achievement of the SDGs from the 2030 Agenda.

Minister of European Integration’s Special Counsellor for the 2030 Agenda Prof. Dr Jelica Stefanovic Stambuk spoke about empowering and including individuals in the implementation of SDGs. She added that the process of implementation of SDGs is integrated in Serbia’s very European integration process.

The Head of the National Assembly’s Focus Group for the Development of Control Mechanisms for the Process of Implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals Dr Milorad Mijatovic said that the Focus Group has taken its work very seriously since its establishment in 2017 which is why Serbia was recognized as a best practice example in last year’s UN Report. Mijatovic said that the Focus Groups works in coordination with the Inter-Ministerial Working Group for the Implementation of the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its goal is to make Serbia a better place to live.

Concluding the public hearing after the debate, Foreign Affairs Committee Deputy Chairperson Dubravka Filipovski said that Serbia ranks first among the countries in the region by the implementation of SDGs.
