Parliamentary Friendship Group with Algeria Meets with Algerian Ambassador to Serbia

In meeting with the Algerian Ambassador to Serbia today, the members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Algeria opined that the traditionally good cooperation between the two countries could be improved and brought to a higher level.

MP Srbislav Filipovic, who chaired the meeting, said that the diplomatic cooperation between the two countries, dating back to 1962 when the Democratic Republic of Algeria gained independence, testifies to the traditionally good relations and at the same time took the opportunity to thank Algeria for its support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

He also said that the economic cooperation between the two countries is moving in the right direction: in 2015 trade reached 16.9 million USD, and in 2016 rose to 42.9 million USD. He said that Serbia is open to Algerian investors, as well as students seeking specialization in Serbia.

H.E. Abdelhamid Chebchoub thanked the PFG members for the opportunity to meet and work on strengthening the two countries' bilateral relations. He said that the long-standing friendship could be the basis to additionally strengthen political, economic and cultural cooperation to mutual benefit. He also said that big Serbian companies continue to do business in Algeria in the spheres of infrastructure, military and education. The Ambassador briefed the MPs on Algeria's regional activities, also informing them that out of the 462 members of the Algerian Parliament, 143 are women.

The participants of the meeting stressed that cooperation could be enhanced in the spheres of tourism, cultural exchange, trade and education. They spoke of reciprocal visits by the two countries' parliamentary friendship groups after the Presidential election in Serbia and the expected parliamentary election in the Democratic Republic of Algeria.

PFG members MA Jadranka Jovanovic, Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic, Josip Broz and Muamer Zukorlic took the opportunity to exchange experiences and discuss cooperation with the Algerian Ambassador.
