Parezanovic Urges Belgium to Continue to Invest into Serbia

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Kingdom of Belgium met today, at the National Assembly House, with the Belgian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Leo D'aes to discuss furthering bilateral and interparliamentary cooperation between the two countries.


Marko Parezanovic, Head of the PFG with Belgium, said he was very pleased by the establishment of the PFG with Belgium in the current legislature as this is an important state not just as a member of Benelux, but as the seat of the European Union. Parezanovic reminded the Ambassador that two years ago a Belgian parliamentary delegation had visited the National Assembly adding that he hoped a chance would present itself for a return visit soon as this would boost cooperation and lead to a mutually beneficial exchange of experiences.

The members of the PFG with Belgium agreed that an exchange of initiatives with their Belgian counterparts would be extremely important for future cooperation, especially in the fields of economy and construction, as would introducing the people to the two countries’ culture and history which would in turn contribute to the development of tourism. They invited the Ambassador to visit Serbian towns and municipalities to learn more about their potentials, which D'aes agreed to do.

Parezanovic added that economic cooperation is key since many Belgian companies are doing business in Serbia, such as Delhaize and Carmeuse, and urged Belgium to continue investing into Serbia. He also said that EU accession in Serbia’s strategic goal, one the citizens are committed to, as demonstrated in the last elections.

Ambassador D’aes agreed that continued cooperation both at the bilateral level and within Serbia’s EU accession process, is of paramount importance, mentioning that Serbia and Belgium enjoy excellent police cooperation, especially in the sphere of organized crime. He said that Belgium, just like the rest of the EU member states, is ready to assist Serbia especially as regards the opening of chapters 23 and 24. Speaking of economic cooperation, Ambassador D’aes said that he had discussed future investments into Serbia with a Belgian business delegation.

The officials concluded that intensified cooperation between the two parliaments’ respective friendship groups would greatly contribute to overall cooperation, mentioning possible environmental cooperation as an example.
