PFG with Portugal Meets with Portuguese Ambassador to Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Portugal, Natasa Jovanovic, and the PFG members met with the Ambassador of Portugal to the Republic of Serbia, José Velez Caroço.

Jovanovic expressed great satisfaction with the meeting, emphasising the importance of intensive cooperation between the two countries, especially considering the fact that Serbia and Portugal have been cultivating good and stable diplomatic relations for 143 years. She invited the Portuguese Parliamentary Friendship Group with Serbia to have a meeting as soon as possible, stressing that parliamentary diplomacy is the foundation of good cooperation that can have a significant impact on all segments of bilateral relations. Ambassador Caroço agreed, pointing to a series of upcoming visits at the highest state level and expressing his belief that they will result in even stronger and deeper cooperation between the two peoples bound by sincere friendship.

In the course of the conversation, Jovanovic raised a number of important topics, particularly highlighting the need to intensify cooperation through joint protocols in the fields of economy, culture, education and science. She informed the Ambassador about the National Assembly’s results and activities, as well as the important laws adopted, with a special emphasis on the imminent prospect of opening Cluster 3, which is a step of exceptional importance for Serbia's European path.

Speaking about European integration, Jovanovic thanked Portugal for its strong and continuous support for Serbia in this process. She also raised the topic of the worrying situation in Kosovo-Metohija, pointing to the daily terror the Serbian people are subjected to by the provisional institutions in Pristina. She recalled that Serbia has fulfilled all its obligations under the Brussels Agreement, while Pristina has, for 13 years, not taken steps towards adopting the Statute of the Community of Serb Municipalities, which would be only the first step in the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina.

Ambassador Caroço stressed that Serbia can continue to count on Portugal's full support in the EU accession process. He stressed that his country is committed to resolving all outstanding issues through dialogue and in accordance with democratic principles, with the hope that the difficult situation of the Serbian and non-Albanian population in the southern Serbian province will be resolved.

The Ambassador also spoke of Serbia's rapid economic growth, which, he stressed, is visible not only through statistical indicators, but concrete infrastructure projects as well. He agreed that interparliamentary cooperation can make a significant contribution to strengthening the already good relations, and that the two peoples should be brought even further closer together through tourism and culture as a universal language of understanding.

The meeting was also attended by PFG members Stasa Stojanovic, Katarina Stojanovic and Ivan Karic.
