PFG with Nigeria Meets with Delegation of Nigerian House of Representatives

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Nigeria Krsto Janjusevic and the PFG members received a delegation of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, led by the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Serbia Aliyu Ibrahim Al-Mustapha.

Krsto Janjusevic expressed satisfaction that the Nigerian Parliament has set up a friendship group with Serbia and that its delegation has come to visit the National Assembly so soon after its formation. He opined that this visit is an important step toward achieving deeper cooperation between our parliaments, as well as our countries. Serbia is committed to cooperation with all countries that want progress, peace and a better future, regardless of geographical distances, said Janjusevic.

He said that there is room to improve economic relations between Serbia and Nigeria, having in mind that Serbia has the highest economic growth in Europe, as well as the largest inflow of direct investments in the Western Balkans.

Krsto Janjusevic thanked Nigeria for supporting Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and not recognising the self-declared independence of so-called Kosovo, which is a gross violation of international law and UNSC Resolution 1244.

PFG member Milovan Drecun added that by supporting Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, Nigeria is protecting international law and advocating that no precedent be set for the violent secession of parts of a country. He said that Serbia also expected Nigeria’s support in opposing so-called Kosovo’s bids for membership in international organisations such as Interpol and UNESCO.

The head of the Nigerian parliamentary delegation Al-Mustapha pointed out that relations between our two countries have always been extraordinary, since the time of the Non-Aligned Movement, adding that Nigeria would never recognise Kosovo's unilateral declaration of independence, nor its bids for membership in international organisations.

He stressed that there is significant room to improve economic as well as agricultural cooperation. "Our parliaments, as legislative bodies, can further improve the conditions for our two countries’ mutual investment", he said.

The meeting with the Nigerian delegation was also attended by PFG members Srbislav Filipovic, Djordje Todorovic, Milos Terzic, as well as Nigerian Ambassador on non-residential basis Modupe Entian Irele.

In the course of the meeting, the officials exchanged ideas and opinions on the possibilities for improving bilateral cooperation between Serbia and Nigeria. They opined that there is significant room for our two countries to intensify political cooperation, as well as cooperation in the fields of information technology, sports, education and the fight against terrorism.
