PFG with Montenegro and Foreign Affairs Committee meet with President of Montenegrin Parliament

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Montenegro and the members of the Foreign Affairs Committee met with the President of the Montenegrin Parliament Ivan Brajovic, currently in official visit to the Republic of Serbia.


The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Montenegro MA Igor Becic greeted the Montenegrin parliamentary delegation headed by Ivan Brajovic saying that promoting parliamentary cooperation could greatly contribute to the improvement of relations between the two countries.

Becic informed the Montenegrin delegation that the PFG he heads boasts 52 members and took the opportunity to thank the Montenegrin people, institutions and private companies for the assistance at the time of the floods in May 2014. The PFG Head said that economic, energy, regional and cross-border cooperation could always stand to be improved, as could agricultural cooperation.

Brajovic stressed that the centuries-long shared history and relations between the countries are following an upward trend both at the political and all other levels and it is paramount to keep improving the two brotherly countries cooperation.

“There is no replacement for parliamentary dialogue, and the intensity of the meetings can only contribute to our good relations”, said the President of the Montenegrin Parliament.

The officials also spoke about European integration and agreed that EU accession should not be viewed as complying with conditions, but meeting standards that will work toward the well-being of both countries. They also said that Serbia and Montenegro could serve as an example to the countries in the region which have not yet started the accession talks and that it is very important for the region that the EU enlargement process remain open. Brajovic said that Montenegro has so far opened 28 chapters and is hoping to, during the Bulgarian presidency of the EU, gain fill membership. The officials agreed that by presenting a unified front in multilateral and international parliamentary institutions and organizations they can reach common goals and both benefit from the experience.

The officials also stressed that the Serbia-Montenegro highway would improve economic cooperation as well as all other aspects that would make the everyday life of both the countries’ citizens easier and promote relations at all levels. They also mentioned loosening the conditions at the border-crossings, security cooperation, the status of Serbian institutions in Montenegro and vice versa, tourism and cultural cooperation on preserving the shared heritage.

The meeting was attended by the members of the PFG with Montenegro, Foreign Affairs Committee as well as MPs Sreten Karic, MA Ivan Kostic and Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic.
