PFG with Mexico Meets with Mexican Ambassador

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Mexico, Olja Petrovic, and the PFG members met with the Ambassador of Mexico to the Republic of Serbia, Carlos Felix, in the National Assembly.

Olja Petrovic said that Serbia is pleased with its relations with Mexico, both on the political and cultural levels, and added that next year marks the 80th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between our two countries.

She pointed out the MPs’ readiness for and interest in intensifying parliamentary cooperation, bearing in mind that this Parliamentary Friendship Group has as many as 46 members.

Petrovic thanked Mexico for its principled position in terms of respecting Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, stressing that Mexico's consistency on the issue of so-called Kosovo’s admission into international organisations is highly appreciated.

Ambassador Carlos Felix agreed that there is potential for improving interparliamentary cooperation, adding that a Parliamentary Friendship Group with Serbia has also been formed in the Mexican Parliament. He underlined the importance of parliamentary diplomacy and establishing closer contacts between parliamentarians, as the directly elected representatives of the citizens.

The meeting was attended by a large number of members of the PFG with Mexico. During the talks, they took the opportunity to express their gratitude to Mexico for respecting international law and to point out the difficult position of the Serbian people on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija, as well as the threat to Serbian cultural heritage in Kosovo-Metohija.

The MPs and the Mexican Ambassador also discussed specific venues for cooperation, such as the twinning of compatible cities in Serbia and Mexico. They agreed that the fact that one of the central streets in Mexico City is named after Belgrade, as well as that there is a Mexican street in the centre of Belgrade it is a confirmation of the great friendship between the countries.

The officials also discussed the turbulent geopolitical developments in the world, noting that it is very important for friendly countries, such as Serbia and Mexico, to support each other on issues of mutual importance.
