PFG with Germany Meets with Representatives of Konrad Adenauer Foundation and Nova Pazova Foundation

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Germany Doc.Dr.Sci.med. Marija Zdravkovic and Group member MA Igor Becic hosted today, in the National Assembly House, representatives of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation and the Nova Pazova Foundation.

Zdravkovic welcomed the guests saying how glad she was to have the opportunity for this meeting and adding that the relations between the two countries rest, above all, on the relations between the citizens. She added that there is room to improve their mutual, interstate and international relations between the two countries. She said that throughout history the two countries have gone through some trials, but today the two peoples want to live in peace and build a brighter future. "It is important for us that our voice is heard in Germany and it is important for us to present the truth about the life of our people in Serbia, and especially about the position of our people on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija, which is part of the Republic of Serbia. Just as Germany has its own provinces, which it believes will always be part of its territory, Serbia sees its own autonomous province of Kosovo-Metohija in the same way. We want to help our people in these areas, because all people have the right to live with dignity and to have their rights respected, regardless of which nation they belong to, especially today when the rights of our compatriots in Kosovo-Metohija are extremely restricted," said the Head of the PFG. She also emphasised that Serbia respects all agreements, unlike the representatives of the Pristina side, which has not fulfilled the agreement on the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities for more than 10 years. She once again thanked the Konrad Adenauer Foundation for organising the meeting, adding how glad she was that the German representatives have come to see the country where some of the visitors were born.

Rainer Yentz, representative of the Nova Pazova Foundation, thanked the MPs for the opportunity to meet and visit the National Assembly. He pointed out that the reason for the arrival of the representatives, including Slovenian representatives, is to mark the 80th anniversary of the escape of the Germans from Serbia during the Second World War. He said that Germans settled in Stara Pazova in 1790 and that the peoples settled in this area lived in peace at that time. He added that Germany wants to look to the future, and that the Serbian-German friendship should be a contribution to general peace, peace in Europe and the unification of peoples.

Gordana Pilipovic, representative of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, thanked the MPs for their hospitality, stressing that the KAS Foundation always feels welcome in the National Assembly House. She pointed out that the visit of representatives of the Nova Pazova Foundation represents a new bridge of cooperation between the two countries. She said that this type of cooperation and format contribute to creating a different and better image of Serbia in Germany.

PFG member Igor Becic pointed out that in his long political career he had the opportunity to meet with German colleagues many times and expressed the view that the two parliaments are showing an increasing interest in cooperation. "Exchanging opinions through these kind of talks not only contributes to the spread of democratic values, but also supports sensitive topics, such as for us the protection of territorial integrity, through the mechanisms of international law," said Becic. He introduced the attendees to the work of the Parliamentary Friendship Group, stating that their goal is to unite peoples and deepen interstate relations. He added that Germany is one of Serbia's key partners in the process of European integration, as well as a strong economic partner. He used the opportunity to point out the importance of understanding of European partners, especially Germany, for the protection of basic human rights, especially of Serbs in the area of Kosovo-Metohija.

Zdravkovic and Becic pointed out that Serbia is moving forward with rapid steps and that the current leadership, headed by the President of the country Aleksandar Vucic, as well as the Speaker of the National Assembly Ana Brnabic, who until recently was also the Prime Minister, has a clear vision of progress, with work and order, and commitment to preserving peace and joining the European Union.

At the end of the meeting, the officials expressed their satisfaction that they share a common vision of improving relations and a common future, and that an exchange of opinions is always welcome.
