PFG with France Meets with French National Assembly Delegation
Members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with France, headed by MA Jadranka Jovanovic, held a meeting today, at the National Assembly House, with a delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of France, currently in official visit to Serbia.
The meeting took place in a spirit of mutual respect, open dialogue and sincere friendship that has been connecting Serbia and France for years. The main topics of discussion were the improvement of bilateral cooperation, cultural and educational exchanges, as well as the further strengthening of economic relations between the two countries.
MA Jadranka Jovanovic said that the current legislature’s PFG with France boasts 65 members and that meetings of this kind confirm the strength and continuity of the traditional friendship between the two countries. She added that France is one of Serbia’s most important economic partners, as evidenced by the Strategic Partnership and Cooperation Agreement as well as 99 bilateral agreements. She stressed that our country appreciates France's support on the European path, as well as the importance of open dialogue on all key issues, including the situation in Kosovo-Metohija. She took the opportunity to point out that she is also the head of the standing delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of La Francophonie and pointed to the potential within Francophone initiatives, especially in the fields of culture and education, but also parliamentary support.
At the interest of the French delegation, headed by Frederic Petit, special emphasis in the conversation was placed on the issue of Kosovo-Metohija. PFG members MA Milovan Drecun, Natasa Jovanovic and Doc. Dr Sci.med. Marija Zdravkovic, informed the French delegation about the current situation on the ground, with an emphasis on security challenges, human rights violations and institutional discrimination against the Serbian population. They highlighted the importance of respecting international law, UNSC Resolution 1244, as well as the constructive role that France can play in the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina. The MPs also pointed out the vital need to establish the Community of Serb Municipalities, stressing that due to the unilateral moves and arbitrariness of Albin Kurti, 20% of the Serbian population had left Kosovo-Metohija in the past year.
The participants of the meeting particularly emphasised the importance of parliamentary ties for strengthening overall interstate relations, with a shared assessment that there is room for more intensive cooperation in interparliamentary institutions.
The meeting concluded with a mutual conviction that the friendship between Serbia and France has deep historical roots, but that it must be strengthened through joint initiatives, dialogue and support.
