OSSI for Easing Procedures for Returnee Students

MA Ivan Kostic, Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, commended the idea of the Organisation of Serbian Students Abroad (OSSI) to ease the procedures for students studying abroad who would potentially return to the mother country and contribute their experiences to the prosperity of the Republic of Serbia.

In the course of the meeting with the representatives of the Organisation of Serbian Students Abroad, the Committee Chairman pointed out that there is no strategy for the students’ return to the mother country and it is one of the objectives of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region to ease the reintegration process for all who want to return to the mother country through the legislative framework, tax breaks, and amendments and modifications to the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Serbia. Kostic also said that the position of director of the Office for Cooperation with the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region is still vacant which reflects on the current situation between the mother country and its people living abroad.

Aleksandar Jakovljevic, President of the Organisation of Serbian Students Abroad, said that there are many legal challenges and regulations that those who want to return and work in Serbia come up against, and OSSI had last year, in cooperation with ENIC/NARIC centre in Belgrade, simplified the process of recognition of degrees earned abroad at the national level, for much less than the fee previously required for this type of service.

The Committee Chairman said he was open to cooperation with the organisation and invited the delegation to the event concerning the protection of the culture of memory of Serbian victims of genocide and the Holocaust victims on 6 October at the National Assembly House. Kostic said that he would assist the projects of the Organisation of Serbian Students Abroad and that before the end of the year the Committee would dedicate a sitting to closer cooperation with the organisation.
