The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received today at the National Assembly House Asma Jahangir, United Nations Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief.

The talks were dominated by topics such as the state of human rights and religious freedoms in Serbia and the relation between the state and religious institutions and freedoms.

The National Assembly Speaker stressed that, under the Constitution, Serbia cultivates religious freedoms, reminding that the Parliament had recently adopted a law prohibiting all kinds of discrimination, including religious, which is a significant victory for parliamentary democracy in establishing religious freedoms in Serbia.

Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic paid particular attention to the state of human rights and religious freedoms in Serbian enclaves in Kosovo-Metohija, stating that the Serbs’ rights there are greatly compromised.

As Asma Jahangir will travel to Kosovo-Metohija at the end of her visit to Serbia, the Assembly Speaker asked the guest to request in-depth information on the human rights and religious freedoms of the Serbian community in Kosovo-Metohija in her talks with the representatives of the Serbian community.
