President of Turkey Abdullah Gül received the Serbian delegation headed by the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic. The delegation comprises deputies Bajram Omeragic, head of the Assembly’s Serbia-Turkey friendship group and Meho Omerovic, member of the parliamentary group.

In a very friendly atmosphere, Gül reminisced about his visit to Serbia, particularly the meetings with the Serbian President and NARS Speaker.

Djukic-Dejanovic pointed out that the two presidents’ idea to meet more often would be applied not only to the parliament speakers, but deputies as well. “Frequent meetings between deputies who can speak more openly about any issue will have a positive impact on the development of overall bilateral relations”, said Gül adding that the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between Turkey and Serbia had considerably improved their economic cooperation.

Considering that the two states share a common goal – full EU membership, the Turkish President stressed that Turkey fully supports Serbia on the road towards it and that the adoption and implementation of laws would improve the position of Serbian citizens just like it improved that of Turkish citizens.

Gül was very pleased at the NARS Speaker’s visit, particularly as it is the first visit by the head of Serbia’s supreme legislative body to Turkey. The Turkish president said that the visit writes “a new page in the history of the two countries’ relations”.
