The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia , Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic talked to the President of the Republic of Slovakia Ivan Gasparovic, in official visit to the Republic of Serbia . They discussed the possible avenues of improvement of all levels of parliamentary cooperation, as well as Serbia’s future steps in the process of integration into the European Union.

President Gasparovic conveyed the greetings of the Slovak Parliament Speaker Pavol Paska to Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic and his invitation to an official visit to Slovakia at the beginning of next year. He expressed his belief that bilateral cooperation would intensify, particularly from the moment Slovakia and Serbia start to share a European future. He stressed that the Republic of Slovakia would share all of its experiences that could be useful for Serbia and the National Assembly on the way to full-fledged European Union membership. The Slovak President said that his country, the outcome of the court proceedings Serbia initiated before the International Court of Justice notwithstanding, would support Serbia’s position – non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija.

National Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic thanked the Republic of Slovakia on its principled position and support of the Republic of Serbia’s efforts to resolve the issue of territorial integrity and sovereignty in Kosovo-Metohija and the European integration process. She estimated that parliamentary relations should be intensified considering that the two countries’ enjoy the highest level of state and political cooperation. The engagement of the two parliaments’ friendship groups shall play a special role in the development of inter-parliamentary cooperation.

President Gasparovic and Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic agreed that the Slovakian minority enjoy full rights in the Republic of Serbia and that by cultivating their language, script, culture and tradition contribute to confirm Serbia’s identity as a multinational and multiconfessional state.
