The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received today at the National Assembly House, Björn Von Sydow, rapporteur of the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly Political Affairs Committee, currently in a two-day visit to Belgrade.

The meeting focused around the current situation in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo-Metohija. The officials discussed the importance of respecting the human rights of its whole population, as well as resolving the status of the persons displaced from the southern Serbian province.

The National Assembly Speaker stressed that painting a truthful picture of the situation in the southern Serbian province before the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly is of paramount importance for Serbia. Considering that the decision of the United Nations General Assembly carried the issue of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo over from the political sphere into the sphere of international law, the Assembly Speaker deemed that a neutral position on the issue is the only one possible until the International Court makes its decision.
