National Assembly Speaker Talks to Chinese Ambassador to Serbia

H.E. Chinese Ambassador Zhang Wanxue deemed the relations between the two countries traditionally friendly, adding that the relationship between China and Serbia was one of strategic partnership.

Ambassador Zhang Wanxue believes that there is room to expand political and all other types of cooperation in various areas and declares China ready to join efforts with the new Government and new Parliamentary legislature to reach a new level of relations between the two countries.

China, according to Ambassador Zhang Wanxue, pays significant attention to parliamentary cooperation which it wishes to improve. He believes that exchanging visits between parliamentary speakers has furthered the relations between the two countries. Ambassador Zhang Wanxue also deemed that the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference is an important factor of cooperation with the RS National Assembly as it is greatly important for the development of interstate relations. He also believes that cooperation between respective committees and MPs and friendship groups in the two parliaments is very important. Serbia is in a key stage of development so it is understandable that there is an initiative at the RS National Assembly to use parliamentary cooperation to strengthen economic cooperation.

Ambassador Zhang Wanxue reminded of the meeting between the highest Chinese officials and representatives of Central, Eastern European countries in April, in Warsaw, aimed at raising trade from fifty billion USD to a hundred. China believes that Serbia is an important factor in the realisation of the plan, so consultations about new projects are underway. Ambassador Zhang Wanxue hopes that the projects will be supported by the Serbian Parliament.

China’s position on Kosovo-Metohija remains consistent. China supports Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity on its entire territory. China will continue to cooperate with Serbia at the United Nations and support its efforts in adhering to Resolution 1244 at the Security Council. Ambassador Zhang Wanxue concluded that mutual support and understanding are an important characteristic of the relations between Serbia and China.

National Assembly Speaker MA Nebojsa Stefanovic thanked China for its assistance and friendship, as well as its principled position on Kosovo-Metohija. He assured the Ambassador that Serbia would not alter its attitude toward the self-proclaimed independence of Kosovo and constant effort to adhere to Security Council Resolution 1244. Speaker Stefanovic stressed that Serbia supports the One-China Policy. He said that China is an economic giant and of significant support to Serbia’s struggle to overcome its economic troubles. In light of it, he proposed an initiative for cooperation between the two parliaments in the economic sphere which would lead to the expansion of the framework for overall economic cooperation. Speaker Stefanovic briefed the guests on the priorities in the Parliament’s work in the upcoming period, which includes public outreach, control of the executive and protection of minorities. The National Assembly Speaker also proposed an initiative for a return visit of the Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference to the National Assembly. Ambassador Zhang Wanxue endorsed the initiative, expressing an expectation that the visit would be realised. The officials agreed on the importance of friendship groups and Speaker Stefanovic informed the guest that a friendship group with PR China would be formed very soon.
