The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, received today a delegation of the United Kingdom Parliament to the Inter-Parliamentary Union, headed by Labour MP Roger Berry.

The British Parliamentarians were interested in the National Assembly’s work, particularly its mode of operations and the role of the assembly committees.

Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic expressed her belief that the adopted amendments and modifications to the Rules of Procedure will enable the National Assembly to function more efficiently, because some of its provisions made it possible to misuse the assembly pulpit for political purposes.

The National Assembly Speaker stressed that the Serbian Parliament has intense legislative work ahead, regarding primarily the adjustment of domestic legislation to that of the European Union, passing systemic laws and ratifying international agreements. These are a pre-condition for Serbia’s speedier accession to the European Union, which is one of its main foreign policy goals.

She said that a new National Assembly Act and new Rules of Procedure will find themselves in parliamentary procedure soon. The assembly committees will be given wider responsibilities and will discuss the complete legal matter in more detail before forwarding it to a plenary session.

The UK members of the Inter-Parliamentary Union expressed support of Serbia’s entry into the European Union and readiness to aid it on its way.
