National Assembly Speaker Talks to Albanian Parliament Speaker

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic, taking part in the 131st session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Geneva, had a meeting today with Albanian Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta where the officials agreed that high-level meetings lead to an improvement in the two countries’ relations and stability in the region.

Gojkovic said that the upcoming visit of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama to Serbia would provide an opportunity for the two countries’ prime ministers to discuss numerous topics as well as promote cooperation which would be a clear indicator of their readiness to improve relations and a positive signal for the region and Europe.

Meta said that he expected Prime Minister Rama’s visit to Belgrade on 22 October to be a good one, stressing that dialogue between Serbia and Albania would lead to an improvement of relations and stability in the region.

The Albanian Parliament Speaker said that there is room to boost cooperation in the fields of trade and goods exchange, infrastructure and energy, saying that Albania endorses the normalisation of relations between Belgrade and Pristina and the implementation of the Brussels Agreement.

Gojkovic and Meta deemed the Euro-integration process to be a suitable framework for the improvement of bilateral relations via reciprocal support and exchange of experiences. In that context they also agreed that interparliamentary cooperation should be intensified.

This year’s autumn session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is attended by 744 parliamentarians from 141 countries, including 144 parliament speakers and their deputies from all over the world.
