The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, received today the newly appointed Canadian Ambassador to Serbia, John Arthur Morrison.

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic, received today the newly appointed Canadian Ambassador to Serbia, John Arthur Morrison. In the talk, both expressed a wish to raise the overall bilateral relations to a higher level, which can be aided by more intensive parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

Assembly Speaker Djukic-Dejanovic informed the Canadian Ambassador that the National Assembly is faced with ample and complicated legislative work and that a large number of laws need to be passed to create the legal framework for further social reform. She stressed that Serbia’s accession to the European Union is one of its main foreign policy goals so the bulk of the parliament’s legislative activity deals with adjusting domestic legislature with that of the EU.

The National Assembly Speaker particularly emphasised the need for the National Assembly to function with more efficiency in the upcoming period and, with that in mind, modifications to the National Assembly Rules of Procedure will be proposed.

The officials also exchanged information on the political situation in Serbia and Canada following the parliamentary elections.
