National Assembly Speaker Receives German Bundestag CDU/CSU Coalition Foreign Policy Advisor

National Assembly Speaker Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic received the German Bundestag CDU/CSU ruling coalition foreign policy advisor Hans-Joachim Falenski.

Falenski asked about the current situation and the Parliament’s role in Serbia’s European integration process.

Speaker Stefanovic said that European integration is the Parliament and Government’s main goal adding that the chief negotiator in the process, Tanja Miscevic, underlined the importance of the Parliament’s role and invited the MPs to follow the “screening” process of chapter 23, scheduled for 25 and 26 September, via the Internet.

The National Assembly Speaker said that the Parliament is ready for cooperation, adding that he believed two Assembly committees – Foreign Affairs and European Integration Committee, to be the most important in the matter. Stefanovic also believes that the Parliament should focus on coordinating the committees’ work and implementing its control role, noting that a special body, which he would chair, could be set up to monitor the process through analysis and suggestions how to reinforce the committees’ efforts. Stefanovic also said that the newly-elected minister in charge of European integration Ruzic and the entire Government is ready to speak openly before the Parliament about the activities planned for the European integration process.

Falenski informed Speaker Stefanovic that the Bundestag will closely follow the implementation of the Brussels agreements, particularly the local elections in Kosovo-Metohija on 3 November, as well as the other elements of the talks, so that the negotiations process might be launched after the European Union’s decision on the negotiations framework.

Speaker Stefanovic was optimistic both about the realisation of the Brussels agreements and the local elections in Kosovo-Metohija.
