National Assembly Speaker Meets with PACE President

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic met today with the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Anne Brasseur, currently in visit to Serbia.

At the joint press conference at the National Assembly, Gojkovic said it was good that Brasseur will gain direct insight into the reform process in Serbia and see for herself the progress the country has achieved as regards the rule of law, human and minority rights and democracy. Gojkovic said that she expected a report on Serbia’s progress by the end of the year and hoped the reform process would contribute to a positive report and Serbia’s transition from the monitoring to the post-monitoring phase.

Brasseur expressed gratitude for the invitation to visit Serbia and make contact with the authorities and the representatives of the civil sector. Brasseur thanked Serbia for the efforts it puts into establishing stability in the region, stressing that a lot has been done in the sphere. Reminding that the Council of Europe comprises 47 member countries and 820 million citizens, Brasseur said that there can be no stability or economic growth in a world that does not protect the fundamental values of human rights, democracy and the rule of law.
