National Assembly Speaker Meets with Montenegrin Prime Minister

National Assembly Speaker Dr Nebojsa Stefanovic met today with the Prime Minister of Montenegro Milo Djukanovic.


The meeting focused on interparliamentary cooperation, European integration, economic, regional and international cooperation between Serbia and Montenegro.

Speaker Stefanovic opined that the two countries’ relations are improving, adding that there is considerable room to raise overall relations to the level of strategic partnership. In the course of the meeting, Stefanovic pointed out the need for reciprocal support between Serbia and Montenegro as regards regional cooperation and European integration, adding that cooperation between Serbia and Montenegro in their mutual effort toward Euro-integration would be a priority in the near future. Stefanovic deemed it necessary for the two countries to intensify their exchange of experiences in the negotiation process and coordinate their efforts toward boosting economic and all other types of cooperation. Speaking of economic cooperation, the National Assembly Speaker opined that Serbia and Montenegro have developed better economic relations in the past year, adding that the realisation of infrastructural modernisation projects and developmental projects would make a significant impact on the two countries’ economies.

Montenegrin Prime Minister Milo Djukanovic said it was important to jointly define the interests in the region. He agreed that cooperation and exchange of experiences between Serbia and Montenegro relating to the European integration process is very important. Pointing out the importance of economic cooperation between Serbia and Montenegro, Djukanovic said that though good, the cooperation should be furthered especially in the spheres of energy production, infrastructure, tourism and development projects. Djukanovic stressed the importance of interparliamentary cooperation which, through the cooperation between parliamentary committees and friendship groups, leads to better understanding and improvement of overall relations between the two countries.

In the course of the meeting the officials agreed that tourism cooperation between Serbia and Montenegro is significant especially in view of a joint venture onto big markets such as China and Japan, listing as example the two countries’ joint offer at the fair in Beijing.

The National Assembly Speaker concluded that Serbia is committed to overcoming all the outstanding issues in the two countries’ mutual interest, through dialogue and in the spirit of mutual appreciation and understanding, stressing that Serbia considers the cooperation with Montenegro important both in the regional and bilateral sense.
