National Assembly Speaker Meets with German Bundestag President

At the margins of the Conference of Presidents of Parliaments of the Council of Europe Member States, the National Assembly Speaker also met with the President of the German Bundestag, Norbert Lammert.

In an open discussion, both sides expressed interest in expanding the framework of bilateral cooperation between the two parliaments. The National Assembly Speaker deemed the recent visit of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Aleksandar Vucic to Berlin as the beginning of a new era in the relations between the two countries. He also mentioned the recent visit of the ruling CDU parliamentary faction to the Serbian Parliament, declaring both visits an opportunity for new breakthroughs in all aspects of inter-relations.

As Assembly Speaker Stefanovic informed him about the current situation in Serbia following the elections, formation of the new government and new parliamentary legislature, the President of the German Parliament said that the role of the Bundestag as a control mechanism of the Government is considerable, which has become quite evident as regards the European Union which is increasingly considered the country’s internal issue. Lammert deemed that every democratic system needs a balance between the parliament and government.

They agreed that deepening cooperation between the two parliaments would be significant for the Serbian Parliament, as would focusing more on those who have taken part or are taking part in the training programmes organised by either the Bundestag or the Konrad Adenauer Foundation which is very active in Serbia. They also launched initiatives to exchange visits of parliamentary delegations, and for the Bundestag President to visit Serbia.
