National Assembly Speaker Meets with Cypriot Ambassador to Serbia

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met today with the Ambassador of Cyprus in Belgrade Andreas Photiou, and on the occasion assessed that the bilateral relations between the two countries have been close and good for decades.

The Speaker referred to the recent visit of the President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis to Serbia, which resulted in the successfully held Third Session of the Cooperation High Council in Belgrade and the signing of a number of Memorandums of Understanding in various fields.

Brnabic thanked Cyprus for its principled position on Serbia’s most important national issues, especially regarding the launching of the procedure to consider the request of so-called of Kosovo to be admitted into the Council of Europe. She added that Serbia supports the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cyprus.

Photiou said that Cyprus supports Serbia in the realisation of its foreign policy priority - full membership in the European Union and that the country is ready to share its experiences in this regard.

At the meeting, the officials opined that the parliamentary cooperation is good, but that there is room for improvement. They also agreed on the further improvement of economic cooperation as the two countries have ample potential to do so.

The Parliament Speaker thanked the Ambassador for the congratulations for her taking office, which she received from the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Annita Demetriou, adding that she would be pleased to visit Cyprus in the future.
