National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic in First Official Visit to Albania

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, currently in the first official visit to Albania at the level of parliament speakers in the history of relations between the two countries, met today with Albanian Parliament Speaker Ilir Meta and Albanian President Bujar Nishani.

The officials opined that the two countries are ready to build friendly relations, utilise the vast potentials especially in the fields of economy and Euro-integration, and improve youth cooperation.
In the meeting with Meta, Gojkovic emphasised the historic significance of her visit to Tirana, declaring it an important moment for bilateral relations since the meeting of elected civil representatives opens the door of understanding between the two nations.
In that context, Meta expressed Albania’s will to look forward saying that “history is written by historians, and it is up to us to create a history of peace, stability and prosperity”.
Gojkovic and Meta stressed that it is important to do away with past prejudice, saying that Serbia and Albania are ready to cooperate to ensure the stability and prosperity of the Western Balkans.
The parliament speakers agreed to improve cooperation between the two assemblies through increased contacts and exchange of experiences between the committees and friendship groups, especially as regards Euro-integration, and Gojkovic invited Meta to come and visit Belgrade.
Gojkovic also pointed out that there is ample room to use the potentials of the Memorandum on Youth Cooperation signed between Serbia and Albania, so that the youth could become a crucial tie between the two countries and asked Albania to take part in the regional youth tourism fair preceding “Exit” festival in Novi Sad.
Gojkovic also spoke with the Albanian President who endorsed the idea of Albania taking part in the youth fair. He said that Albania wishes to build solid relations with Serbia, stating that though the history of the Western Balkans was tough, we must not be the hostages of history, we have to turn to the future and the new generations should be led by the ideas of companionship and friendship.
The Serbian Assembly Speaker highlighted the importance of realising the projects forged at the summit in Berlin in August of last year, especially in the fields of infrastructure and energy.
Gojkovic and Nishani agreed that the countries of the Western Balkans belong in the European Union and the Euro-integration process should be viewed as the completion of the European territory.
In the course of the visit to Albania, Gojkovic will also meet with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama and Mayor of Tirana Lulzim Basha, and she also met with representatives of Serbian associations in Albania.
