National Assembly Speaker Ivica Dacic Meets with Council of Europe Secretary General

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ivica Dacic met today with Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric.

Assembly Speaker Dacic expressed satisfaction at Pejcinovic Buric’s visit to Belgrade. He stressed that Serbia is very happy with its cooperation with the Council of Europe and the significant support it provides on the path to reform and full EU membership in terms of the rule of law, democratisation of society and promotion of human rights. In that context, Dacic especially emphasised the support of the Venice commission and the considerable cooperation realised on the set of judiciary reforms.

Council of Europe Secretary General Marija Pejcinovic Buric thanked the Speaker for the hospitality stressing that the Council of Europe would, as before, continue to provide support through joint CoE and EU programmes, including the Horizontal Facility programme. She said that evident progress had been made in Serbia, through the cooperation with the CoE expert bodies, in the protection of human rights, freedom of expression and media freedom, freedom of assembly and association and protection of national minorities.

The officials also exchanged opinions on the current situation in Ukraine. Pejcinovic Buric took the opportunity to inform the Assembly Speaker on the activities the Council of Europe is undertaking on that front, underlining that dialogue and diplomacy are the only way to come up with a viable solution.

National Assembly Speaker Ivica Dacic praised PACE’s decision to send an observation mission to the parliamentary and presidential elections in Serbia, with the representatives of which he had met last week and expressed readiness and openness to, as before, cooperate with them.
