National Assembly Deputy Speaker Snezana Paunovic Meets with Italian Ambassador to Serbia

The Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Snezana Paunovic met today with Italian Ambassador to Serbia Luca Gori, and the central topic of the conversation was bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

The officials agreed that bilateral cooperation is following an upward trend in all areas, especially in the fields of economy, culture, science and defence. Snezana Paunovic added that in addition to being a Deputy Speaker, she also heads the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy, opining that the two countries’ parliamentary committees could hold a joint session that would motivate the respective governments to realise their goals for the benefit of both peoples. The Ambassador also announced the arrival of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Lower House of Italy to Serbia, and Paunovic expressed confidence that this visit will contribute to the improvement of further bilateral relations between the two countries.

Gori said that one of the priorities of his mandate is the intensification of parliamentary diplomacy and support for Serbia on its way to becoming a full member of the European Union. Paunovic said that Serbia is ready for the opening of cluster 3 despite the fact that this process will not be easy, considering the recent elections for the European Parliament. Speaking of which, she asked the Ambassador to convey congratulations to Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on the results achieved for the European Parliament. She pointed out that Serbia is determined to stay on the path of European integration, which is not at all easy for our country. "I am sure that we will move faster towards the European family and that it will have a little more understanding for what is often unfairly put as an obstacle to Serbia joining the EU. I think it is a boon for the Union that Serbia, as the central country of the Western Balkans and the most developed country in the region, becomes part of the European family, because it will make room to decrease all doubts, misunderstandings, different ambitions and overcoming the difficult years that are behind us,” said Paunovic. She pointed out that even with the global political changes that are happening in the world, Europe must remain focused on itself and that it will do this most easily if it rounds up and completes its family. "The European Union was conceived and formed as a family that needs to defend its interest and its territory, and that is perhaps the most important issue for the old continent today," added the Deputy Speaker. The meeting also touched on the Growth Plan, which was adopted by the Council of the European Union at the beginning of May this year, and which will provide aid of 6 billion euros to the Western Balkans.

The National Assembly Deputy Speaker used the opportunity to thank Italy for its support of Serbia’s European integration, as well as for postponing the reception of the so-called State of Kosovo into the Council of Europe. Gori said that Italy believes that there must be significant progress in the negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina, pointing out the need for the formation of the Community of Serb Municipalities.

The officials expressed readiness to further strengthen cooperation in all areas of common interest concluded that the two countries are connected by long-standing and sincere friendship, as indicated by the 145 years of diplomatic relations and 15 years of Strategic Partnership.
