National Assembly Deputy Speaker Elvira Kovacs Meets with Hungarian Ambassador to Serbia

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Elvira Kovacs met today with Hungarian Ambassador to Serbia Jozsef Magyar.

At the very beginning of the meeting, Kovacs thanked Hungary for being the only European country to vote against the Srebrenica Resolution at the United Nations General Assembly. "Citizens of Serbia were touched by Hungary's move, which showed that it is a true and sincere friend to the Republic of Serbia," said the National Assembly Deputy Speaker.

The Ambassador stressed how very pleased he was that Kovacs was re-elected to head the European Integration Committee and is once again one of the Deputy Speakers of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, as she will continue to represent Serbia in European institutions of which it is not yet a full member. "We do not want the separation of borders, which also separate two peoples, two friendly countries, on the contrary we want to reduce and remove all the barriers that exist today, be they institutional, coming from legal status, such as the European Union and the Schengen zone", the Ambassador said. He added that internationally, Hungary will continue to implement its policy and support Serbia, because it sees Serbia as a friend and strategic partner. He also highlighted the importance and connection of the Hungarian community in Serbia and its representatives who represent it in our country. He said that after the elections for the European Parliament, scheduled for on Sunday, Hungary will announce the official programme of its presidency of the European Union Council

He underlined that Hungary will have a series of activities in Serbia as well and asked the National Assembly Deputy Speaker to increase the scope of the partnership between Serbia and Hungary, so that the citizens would have a better picture of what the European Union can do for Serbia. The Ambassador also spoke about a series of infrastructure projects that aim to connect the two nations and make everyday life easier for their citizens, such as the bridge on the Danube near Mohacs and the expansion of the Kelebia border crossing. The officials agreed that intergovernmental cooperation is at an enviable level and that the two countries’ Strategic Council has made a step forward in political relations much to mutual benefit, and that the session of the Economic Cooperation Joint Commission, as well as the Strategic Council, with parliamentary and governmental representatives, is being prepared for the autumn of this year.

Kovacs said that the National Assembly also has a lot of work to do and that the SNS coalition partners from the Hungarian national minority in Serbia were among the first to be appointed to the Government of the Republic of Serbia. She explained that the priorities of National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic, in addition to solving issues and implementing ODIHR recommendations, are strengthening the National Assembly’s parliamentary diplomacy and transparency. She said that the European Integration Committee has been established and is working at full capacity, with the main goal of strengthening its supervisory role and maintaining contacts with international institutions. She added that the European Integration Committee is also preparing for the Hungarian presidency of the EU Council. She mentioned that Euroscepticism in Serbia is growing, because our country’s European integration has been stagnant for two and a half years, and Serbia hopes that during the Hungarian presidency it will succeed in opening cluster 3, because we are ready for this step. Kovacs also said that, in addition to the Alliance of Vojvodina Hungarians, the Republic of Serbia campaigned for the citizens with dual citizenship to take part in the vote for the European Parliament. She restated that Serbia must have more direct communication with the European institutions and that this is another of the goals of the members of parliament and its working bodies in the coming period.

Kovacs and the Ambassador also discussed the challenges at border crossings and capacity building, and its importance for the citizens of the two countries who cross from one to another every day. Kovacs also conveyed the message of gratitude for the head of the Hungarian delegation, Nemeth Zsolt, who spoke openly against the membership of so-called of Kosovo in the Council of Europe.

The officials agreed that instead of technical preparations for EU membership, the negotiation process has assumed a political character, under the pretext of Russian aggression against Ukraine, which reflects poorly on the countries of the Western Balkans. They also spoke that the EU's foreign and security policy is in focus due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, but that it is necessary to lobby for the European Union to pay more attention to the European integration process of candidate countries. The meeting also touched on the economic and financial benefits of joining the EU, as well as the adoption of the Reform Agenda. On the topic, Kovacs added that the National Assembly wants to organise a public hearing on the Reform Agenda so that the public will learn ay learn more about it.
