National Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Vladimir Orlic meets with Delegation of United Nations University for Peace European Centre for Peace and Development

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Dr Vladimir Orlic met today with a delegation of the European Centre for Peace and Development of the United Nations University for Peace headed by Sergey Alexandrovich Kharkov, President of the Russian Federation’s Parliamentary Centre.

Orlic said that energy security is currently a very hot topic in the world because of the impact of the pandemic. "There are serious challenges in the energy sector and the fact that our state is very much secured at the moment in terms of our electricity production and gas reserves it is crucial for us. This is a because of the wise state policy pursued by the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, which has the strong support of our National Assembly. Right now, the wisdom of that policy has been clearly proven in practice in Serbia, unlike in many European countries which had not carefully considered the challenges and today find themselves in a situation where they do not have enough energy for their population and economy. Thanks to the fact that we pursued a sovereign policy, that we did not succumb to anyone's pressure, we managed to meet this moment economically and energetically stable, ready and determined to plan our own future on these issues. In this regard, the talks between the Presidents of Serbia and Russia, Aleksandar Vucic and Vladimir Putin, planned for November, are of crucial importance."

Orlic said that Serbia invests significant funds in the development of science and education, evident in the infrastructure provided in Serbia today. "These are often projects that we have been waiting for for several decades and have today, thanks to the policy pursued by the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, become able to build new scientific institutes, centres of excellence and science and technology parks. In several cities in the country these parks have been personally opened by the President of the Republic in the past few years.” He added that the intense work in the area would continue in the coming period and speaking of the most important results of the policy pursued by Serbia today the gas infrastructure has a special place, as a rule, such as the recently built Balkan Stream, which provides additional security for the Serbian economy and population, the people always being in the very centre of the state policy’s focus.

Deputy Speaker Orlic thanked Russia for its principled support in the challenges Serbia is facing in relation with Kosovo-Metohija. Orlic added that the UN’s role is indisputable. "We are especially proud that, by pursuing a wise and patient policy, we have made sure that, at the moment, 19 different countries have withdrawn their recognition of so-called "Kosovo", which is directly reflected in the balance of power in the United Nations General Assembly. We will certainly continue to fight for our state and national interests, both in the UN and in the ongoing political dialogue conducted in Brussels, as well as in every other arena", Orlic pointed out.

"I am convinced that our interstate relations, which are following a clear upward trend, will reach even greater heights. That is a logical consequence of the mutual respect that exists between the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, and the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, as well as of all the good things we realised in the years behind us."

Sergey Alexandrovich Kharkov thanked the host for the warm reception and welcome, on behalf of the members of the Russian Duma and the European Centre for Peace and Development of the University of Russia, as well as for the organisation of the meeting which will be useful in bringing the two nations closer together and to both of their benefits.

Kharkov informed the Deputy Speaker about the establishment of new parliamentary groups in the State Duma and the importance of cooperation with parliaments of other countries in the field of environmental security, as well as cooperation with the UN Peace University. Kharkov agreed that Serbia acted correctly in its energy planning in order to provide for its people, adding that cooperation between Serbia and Russia is important in this aspect as well, along with scientific potentials and social and economic aspects, all for the benefit of the citizens of both countries. Kharkov said that it was a wise policy move, leading to stability and significant results in the construction of the country’s infrastructure, for the benefit of its people. He proposed joint cooperation within the International Centre for Environmental Security and Mediation, all within the framework of national diplomacy, which is a very important link in the operation of state structures.
