National Assembly Delegation Takes Part in Meeting of PACE Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons

Members of the standing delegation of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) Vladimir Djordjevic and Djordje Stankovic took part in the meeting of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Displaced Persons, held on 9 and 10 December 2024, in Paris.

The central themes were saving migrants’ lives at sea and protecting their human rights and putting an end to collective expulsions of foreigners. The discussion included experts from various organizations, including Frontex, Inspectorate General of Places of Deprivation of Liberty in France, International Federation for Human Rights and others.

Particular emphasis was placed on the legal, humanitarian and institutional obstacles that contribute to the violation of migrants' rights and the participants called for stronger coordination in the protection of human rights at the European level.

In the discussion on "Putting an end to collective expulsions of foreigners", Vladimir Djordjevic raised key questions about the role and purpose of Frontex, pointing out the need to review its effectiveness. He raised the question of the justification for its existence after all these years, noting that Frontex, in his opinion, is not successful in protecting the lives of migrants and that it often only passively observes the events at the borders. His observations prompted a discussion on the effectiveness and responsibility of Frontex in protecting migrants.

Other items on the agenda included a discussion on priorities for 2025 and the challenges and needs of public and private actors involved in migration management.
