At the invitation of Professor Dr Branko Kovacevic, chairman of the Organising Committee of ETRAN (the Association for Electronics, Telecommunications, Computing, Automation, and Nuclear Technology), the Chairman of the National Assembly, Predrag Markovic, spoke at the formal opening of the Association’s fiftieth conference.

Mr Markovic told the conference that the most important concern at this moment of renewal of Serbia’s nationhood was to ‘read meaning into’ the four traditional fire-irons, on the Serbian coat of arms, resembling letters S in the Cyrillic alphabet, and take them to mean stability, solidarity, self-respect, and standards for all Serbian citizens. He called on ETRAN members to contribute, both professionally and personally, to this process, and accelerate Serbia’s road to European integrations.

ETRAN’s 50th conference is being organised from 6 to 8 June by Belgrade’s Faculty of Electrical Engineering and the Novi Sad Faculty of Technical Sciences, in co-operation with the Academy of Engineering Sciences and Serbia’s national IEEE section, and with the overall sponsorship of the Ministry of Science and Environmental Protection and the Vojvodina Secretariat of Science and Technological Development.
