NATO Secretariat’s Expert Delegation Visits National Assembly’s Standing Delegation to NATO PA

The members of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the NATO PA met today with the NATO Secretariat’s expert delegation visiting Belgrade to monitor the implementation of the Individual Partnership Action Plan (IPAP) between Serbia and NATO.

The officials agreed that both Serbia and NATO should help change the public opinion on Serbia’s cooperation with the Alliance and explain to the citizens why such cooperation is a necessity.

The Head of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the NATO PA Dragan Sormaz briefed the NATO Secretariat’s delegation, comprising Laurie Walker, expert of the NATO Secretariat’s Political Affairs Division, and Brigadier General Cesare Marinelli, Chief of the NATO Military Liaison Office in Belgrade, in detail on the parliamentary control and oversight of the security services, as well as the work of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and the Security Services Control Committee.

“I believe that we have made considerable progress in the way the Parliament fought for its position as regards the control of the work of agencies and ministries compared to year 2000 when I first became an MP. We are one of few European parliaments to have a say in the participation of our armed forces in UN and EU peace missions, which has been endorsed by all the parliamentary groups in the National Assembly”, said Sormaz stressing that the National Assembly had, in the previous period, debated all the NATO agreements in the plenum and accepted them unanimously.

Dubravka Filipovski, member of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the NATO PA, outlined the innovations in the work of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee such as the presence of ministers at the sittings dedicated to activity reports, emphasising the MPs’ interest in the implementation of IPAP and UNSC Resolution 1325 - Women, Peace and Security. She added that the implementation of the Resolution had resulted in boosting the number of women soldiers in Serbia to 7.8%, however, she said, there still are no women generals. Filipovski also added that in the previous legislature the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee was headed by a woman, and the plan is to do the same in the new one.

Branislav Blazic, member of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the NATO PA, said that Serbia has a clear political goal which is to be the factor of stability in the Balkans and future EU member state, but a military neutral country as well.
