NARS Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Talks to Bundestag MP

Today, at the National Assembly House, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Dragoljub Micunovic received Bundestag MP and Spokesman for the Social Democratic Party Dr Rolf Mützenich, at his request. The meeting, which focused on many issues, was attended by representatives of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

The Bundestag MP emphasised the importance of Serbia’s continued Euro-integration process, saying that the reason for his visit was to confirm the Social Democratic Party’s interest in seeing Serbia soon be granted EU candidate status and receive its place in Europe. Declaring it greatly important not only for Serbia but the region as a whole, he stressed that during all of his meetings in Belgrade he was assured that the Government and Parliament were hard at work to make sure the issue was resolved in March.

Chairman Micunovic confirmed that the candidacy was important for Serbia and that it should be given the perspective to soon become a member of European nations. Otherwise, failing to become a candidate would encourage the anti-European powers in Serbia and slow down its economic and general development. He expressed his firm belief that the requirements would soon be met and a compromise solution found, restating that Serbia was always ready for negotiations and dialogue. Micunovic thanked the Friedrich Ebert Foundation for its activities in Serbia, stressing that it played an important role in facilitating the citizens’ understanding of European values and standards and deepening interrelations.

Taking part in the meeting, Foreign Affairs Committee member Zeljko Ivanji said he hoped that the Kosovo issue would reach a realistic and sustainable solution, adding that EU membership played an important role in Serbia’s economic development and prosperity. Ivanji also stressed that the Friedrich Ebert Foundation has greatly contributed to the development of democracy in Serbia.
