Mother Tongue Olympics Winners from Romania Visit National Assembly

MP and member of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Aleksandar Cotric hosted a group of teachers and students from Romania visiting Serbia and the Republic of Srpska via the Union of Serbs in Romania.

As part of their educational and cultural award-trip, “Discover Serbia and the Republic of Srpska”, having visited Belgrade, the 27 winners of the Mother Tongue Olympics will also visit Topola, Mecavnik and Visegrad.
Cotric congratulated the winning students saying that both the Serbian diaspora and the Republic of Serbia consider developing and knowing one’s mother tongue very important. He believes it to be one of the ways to halt the dwindling numbers of Serbs in the Republic of Romania, which happen to be lower with each successive census. He also stressed that the position of Serbs, who have the status of national minority in the Republic of Romania, is exceptionally good, adding that though the two countries enjoy friendly relations there is still room to further develop their cooperation.
The students were also addressed by the Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society Prof. Dr Ljubisa Stojmirovic who told them they were lucky to be speaking the language with both the most perfect and simple script in the world, urging them to continue cultivating their mother tongue and the Cyrillic script.
The winners of the Mother Tongue Olympics will be visiting the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska until 30 August. The delegation of teachers and students will be headed by the President of the Union of Serbs in Romania Ognjan Krsic.
