Members of PFG with UAE Have Virtual Meeting with UAE PFG with Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the United Arab Emirates Jelena Zaric Kovacevic, and the PFG members held an online meeting today with the UAE Parliament’s Friendship Group with Serbia.


The topics of the meeting were strengthening parliamentary and bilateral cooperation, combating the Coronavirus, empowerment of women and youth and their greater representation in the legislative and executive branches of government, as well as in the private sector.

At the very beginning of the meeting, the Head of the PFG with the UAE Jelena Zaric Kovacevic greeted the attending representatives of the UEA Parliament on behalf of the National Assembly Speaker and all the MPs, herself included.

She briefed her UAE colleagues on the very intensive bilateral cooperation and numerous joint projects realised by the two countries.

Jelena Zaric Kovacevic expressed her satisfaction with the successfully organised visit of President Vucic to the UAE. On the occasion, the two sides agreed to jointly build a factory for the production of the Chinese COVID vaccine Sinopharm in Serbia, in cooperation with China. She thanked the UAE for the medical help in the fight against the global pandemic.

She reminded the UAE parliamentarians of the recent video meeting with the students of the United Arab Emirates National Defence College, who were briefed on the work of the National Assembly and its working bodies. She went on to inform them that the PFG with the UAE consists of 72 MPs, which is significantly more than in the previous legislature, a clear proof that the MPs have recognised the excellent cooperation with the United Arab Emirates. She also mentioned the Agreement on Parliamentary Friendship Association signed between the two parliaments, which is an excellent basis for the development of parliamentary cooperation.

Members of the PFG with the UAE, Dr Muamer Zukorlic, Snezana Paunovic, Nevena Djuric, Stanislava Janosevic and Milan Ilic, also took part in the meeting.

Dr Muamer Zukorlic spoke about the excellent relations between the two parliaments, especially about the relations that have been on the rise lately viz. in the field of economy, which reflected positively on the entire spectrum of social and cultural relations. He also spoke about the relations between the two multi-civilization worlds, in this case one Muslim and one Christian Orthodox country in Europe, which are far better than the bilateral relations between other countries.

Snezana Paunovic spoke about the representation of women in parliament and expressed hope that the law on gender equality will soon be in the parliamentary procedure and contribute to even better representation of women in the parliament and the executive power.

Nevena Djuric and Milan Ilic spoke about the greater representation of young people in the current parliamentary legislature and the good response of the Serbian healthcare system and leadership in the fight against COVID-19. They also informed their counterparts about the successful implementation of vaccination, the fact that there are four types of vaccines available in Serbia and that the country has opened the door to the citizens of the neighbouring countries to come and be vaccinated.

Stanislava Janosevic spoke about the economic measures implemented by Serbia during the pandemic, the one-time assistance in the amount of 100 EUR for all adult citizens, as well as two-part assistance that will be paid this year. In addition, two COVID hospitals were built in the last four months, she said, which additionally speaks about Serbia’s capacities.

The Head of the PFG with Serbia Sara Mohammad Amin Falaknaz agreed that cooperation between the two countries is at an exceptional level, hoping for an exchange of parliamentary visits in the future and ands improvement of cooperation in the field of culture, tourism, agriculture, energy and education.

She mentioned her country’s investments in Serbia, hoping that Serbian investments into the United Arab Emirates would follow.

The members of the PFG with Serbia spoke about the epidemiological situation in their country, stressing that more than 80% of the citizens have been vaccinated and about 37.5 million PCR tests have been performed. They also stated that the Federal National Council of the UAE boasts 50% of women and 25% of young MPs.

The participants of the meeting concluded that the cooperation between the two countries is at a high level but there is also room for an even more intensive parliamentary cooperation.
