Meeting of Serbian and Romanian Parliamentary Delegations

The parliamentary delegations of Serbia and Romania had two separate meetings at the National Assembly House today.


In the meeting between the National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic and MP Aleksandar Cotric and the Romanian parliamentary delegation comprising Senator and Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Serbia at the Romanian Parliament Prof. Dr Ben-Oni Ardelean, Romanian MP and member of the PFG with Serbia Dr Slavomir Gvozdenovic and Romanian Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Daniel Banu, the participants shared their mutual pleasure at the long-standing friendly relations between the Serbian and Romanian people.
National Assembly Deputy Speaker Prof. Dr Vladimir Marinkovic said he hoped for a strengthening of the cultural and economic ties between the two states, highlighting the importance of the intensified parliamentary cooperation.
The Romanian parliamentary delegation briefed its hosts on the manner in which minority communities in Romania exercise their rights and representation of minority parliamentary groups at the Romanian Parliament. The members of the Romanian parliamentary delegation pointed out that the rights of the Romanian ethnic minority in Serbia need more protection, such as education and media in their mother tongue and religious freedom.
The Romanian delegation showed strong support for Serbia’s European integration, and the members of both delegations declared themselves ready to take part in addressing all open issues by diplomatic means.

In the meeting with the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Romania Miletic Mihajlovic and PFG members, the participants noted that cooperation between the two states should be intensified at all levels, while the PFG Head underlined the importance of the adoption of the Danube Strategy whose implementation will prove mutually beneficial for the two states.
The members of the two delegations agreed that national minority rights in Serbia and Romania should take central place in the two countries future relations. At the same time, they are a clear indicator of the fulfilment of European Union human and minority rights standards and United National tenets.
The meeting also touched on how to resolve the issue of restitution by the principle of reciprocity and the work of the Serbia-Romania Mixed Intergovernmental Commission.
They also agreed that the two parliamentary friendship groups should meet by the end of the year.
