MPs at EP Seminar
The European Parliament and European Commission organized a seminar on “Bridging the gap between youth policy, youth participation and parliamentarians in the Western Balkan countries” at the European Parliament, Brussels, 20-21 November 2017.
The seminar was intended for young people from the Western Balkans: young members of Western Balkan parliaments, regional youth organization activists, as well as young members of the European Parliament.
On the behalf of the National Assembly the seminar was attended by MPs Stefana Miladinovic, Ivana Nikolic, Milena Turk and Maja Videnovic.
In the course of the seminar, its 60 participants discussed the role of parliamentarians in promoting youth-related policies and the involvement of young people in politics, new opportunities for supporting youth in politics, role of parliaments in empowering civil society organizations, role of young people in light of the Berlin Process and launching youth cooperation initiatives in the Western Balkans.
MPs Stefana Miladinovic and Maja Videnovic said that since 2007 Serbia has had a Ministry of Youth and Sports as a special government body dedicated to youth issues. Serbia also has a Law on Youth and had in early 2015 passed a National Youth Strategy for the period 2015-2025. Serbia is also taking part in the realization of a number of projects financed from EU funds and is the most successful EU fund beneficiary in the region. They also stressed that Serbia supports the work of the newly established Regional Youth Cooperation Office situated in Tirana.
The seminar was held in parallel with the roundtable on the Western Balkans’ European integration process which offered the participants a more comprehensive view into the whole context of the EU integration process. It also provided an opportunity for networking and promoting cooperation between the participants.
The members of the Western Balkan parliamentary delegations also attended a session of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs.
