MP Dr Darko Laketic Takes Part in SEECP PA Standing Committee Meeting in Ljubljana

Dr Darko Laketic, member of the National Assembly’s standing delegation to the South East Europe Cooperation Process Parliamentary Assembly (SEECP PA), took part in the meeting of the SEECP PA Standing Committee held on 16 December 2017 in Ljubljana, under the auspices of Slovenia’s chairmanship of the South East Europe Cooperation Process.


This first meeting under Slovenia’s chairmanship was dedicated to its priorities summarized under the motto SEE4Future – South Eastern Europe for Future, the Regional Cooperation Council’s activity plan, the activities of the three general committees and the future development and work of the Parliamentary Assembly.

The meeting was opened by Slovenian Parliament Speaker and head of the Slovenian delegation to the SEECP Parliamentary Assembly Dr Milan Brglez who said that the Republic of Slovenia truly appreciates and endorses the Assembly’s work and believes it to be the most developed platform in South East Europe which can help resolve all the challenges that come up in the region, as well as promote economic development, stability and peace in the region. Brglez informed the representatives of the participating parliaments that the Slovenian chairmanship’s priorities are: continued support for the EU's enlargement policy which is also one of Slovenia’s foreign policy goals, strengthening security in the region, better prospects for young people through cooperation and digitalization and development of electronic services. Speaker Brglez spoke about the prospects for the further development of the Parliamentary Assembly hoping that, in the spirit of cooperation within the initiative based on cooperation, networking, exchanging information and experiences and mutual understanding, a common and the best solution would soon be found to appoint a permanent seat of the SEECP PA Secretariat.

The continuation of the meeting, chaired by deputy head of the Slovenian delegation to the SEECP PA Branko Zorman, focused on the Regional Cooperation Council’s goals and possible joint projects, and the representatives of the Bulgarian Parliament presented the priorities of Bulgaria’s Presidency of the EU Council stressing that the chief one is promoting the enlargement policy and having the Western Balkan countries join the European Union. The members of the SEECP PS Standing Committee spoke about security in Europe, terrorist threats and illegal migration, emphasizing the need to join efforts, cooperate and exchange information in these areas. They underlined their strong commitment to the further enlargement of the European Union and adherence to the European perspective and future of the countries of South East Europe.

Dr Darko Laketic stressed Serbia’s commitment to regional cooperation, constructive dialogue and addressing the acute European crises, emphasizing the importance of joint efforts and mutual understanding within the regional initiative. Laketic wished the Republic of Slovenia a successful chairmanship agreeing that the South East Europe Cooperation Process is an extremely important forum where the parliamentarians can exchange opinions, achieve common interests and cooperate in a number of fields as evidenced by its two decades of existence. He endorsed the priorities of the Slovenian chairmanship of the SEECP hoping that the entire region would join efforts to achieve them. Laketic concluded that the problems in the region can only be resolved together, through cooperation and in good faith, and went on to speak about the concentrated efforts invested into tackling the migrant crisis.

The members of the Standing Committee went on to discuss the institutionalization and how to increase the visibility of the SCCEP Parliamentary Assembly, the open issue of the Secretariat’s permanent seat and the model of financing of the Parliamentary Assembly. The meeting in Ljubljana was attended by representatives of the parliaments of Albania, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Greece, Romania, Montenegro, Croatia, Turkey and Macedonia.
