Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Meets with Bundestag Delegation

Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Dr Muamer Bacevac and the Committee members met today with the delegation of the Committee on Human Rights and Humanitarian Aid of the German Bundestag, currently visiting the National Assembly.

Dr Muamer Bacevac briefed the guests on the work and responsibilities of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, with special focus on its control role consisting of reviewing the quarterly activity reports of the competent Ministry of Human and Minority Rights and Social Dialogue as well the annual activity reports of the Ombudsman and the Commissioner for the Protection of Equality. As it is a burning issue, the Committee is especially dedicated to combating femicide and improving the position of the Roma national minority, working to suppress child marriage in particular, said Bacevac.

Speaking about the current situation in Kosovo-Metohija, the members of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality drew attention to the violation of the rights of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, pointing out that the Quint states should take stricter measures towards Pristina to ensure the violence stops as soon as possible and the conflict is not escalated, the consequences of which would be felt throughout the Balkans.

The Bundestag delegation, headed by Renata Alt, was interested in the position of the LGBTIQ population in Serbia and the conditions under which EuroPride 2022 was held in Serbia. They were also interested in the position of national minorities and the Committee’s priorities, as well as the possibilities for dialogue and cooperation between the parliamentary groups in the National Assembly.

In addition to Dr Bacevac, the meeting was attended by Committee members Doc. Dr Biljana Djordjevic, Dr Anna Oreg, Prof. Zoran Radojicic, Sandra Jokovic and Andrijana Vasic, who expressed their opinions and views on the abovementioned topics.

The officials exchanged experiences in the work of the two committees, opining that topics such as gender equality, combating femicide and domestic violence are of general interest to every society. The meeting also touched on the current situation in Europe and the impact of the war in Ukraine on Serbia and Germany.
