Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman – Press Statement

The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Meho Omerovic made the following statement concerning the physical attack on gay activist Boban Stojanovic:

“Violence against LGBT persons, physical attacks and threats are, regretfully, proof that people of alternative sexual orientation remain one of the most vulnerable categories in our society.

The attack on one of the organisers of the Pride Parade, public humiliation and insults are the fifth attack of this kind since the beginning of the year.

The police must find the assailants who had given themselves the right to physically attack a man just because he is gay. Today, they attack someone for being gay, tomorrow they will attack someone for being a Roma, the day after that someone different in another way. How long?

The state must solve this case, it must show that all citizens are equal and punish those who use violence to show how they feel about those who are different!

If it doesn’t, fear will dog LGBT people and attackers will feel powerful and untouchable. The state authorities cannot allow this.”
