Horrors of War Paved Way for Strong Friendship between Serbia and Norway

The Parliamentary Friendship Group with Norway met with the Norwegian Embassy in Belgrade military envoy Egil Daltveit and Institute for Contemporary History research associate Dr Bojan Dimitrijevic on the anniversary of the "Blood Road" POW landing in Norway.

The Head of PFG with Norway Milenko Jovanov said that one of Serbia’s strategic goals is to build a "culture of memory" and that no victim should be forgotten:

"We have been waiting for a long time to say loud and clear that as a nation we have suffered a lot throughout history, just because of what we are. Thanks to the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic we have begun to nurture the culture of remembrance, and it is our duty never to neglect it again," said Jovanov.

Norwegian Embassy in Belgrade military envoy Egil Daltveit said that the tragic fate of about 5,000 prisoners, half of whom were Serbs, who were transferred from the former Yugoslavia to camps in Norway in World War II, forever paved the way for the friendship of the two peoples.

"That connection continues to this day and Serbia has a sincere friend in Norway, one that fully supports your path to full EU membership. Serbia fought in both world wars, always on the right side and through our support, we want to pay tribute to all Serbian victims of the war," said Daltveit. He spoke of the numerous testimonies of the Norwegian people’s kindness to the detainees, risking everything to supply them with food and clothing.

Institute for Contemporary History research associate Dr Bojan Dimitrijevic spoke about the historical facts that testify to the suffering of prisoners in over 30 camps in Norway, while Irina Ilic, Kikinda’s "Dusan Vasiljev" Grammar School senior, presented her award-winning scientific work on the suffering of Serbs in Norwegian camps.
