Head of PFG with UAE Speaks to UAE Ambassador about Improving Parliamentary Cooperation

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the United Arab Emirates, Danijela Nikolic, met with the Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Serbia, H.E. Ahmed Hatem Barghash Al Menhali.

The officials underlined the importance of improving interparliamentary cooperation, which, as the Ambassador pointed out, can have a positive impact on the overall relations between the two countries. The relations between Serbia and the Emirates were deemed very good, based on mutual respect, understanding and intensive cooperation between the two state leadership.

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the UAE, Danijela Nikolic, said that the 42 strong group evidences the strong commitment of the Serbian Parliament to developing relations with this friendly country. She reminded of the importance of the highest state visits and numerous bilateral agreements signed, which contribute to the further strengthening of cooperation and friendship.

Speaking about economic cooperation, Nikolic pointed out that the United Arab Emirates ranks 15th on the list of the largest foreign investors in Serbia. She opined that there is significant potential for improving economic relations, both through increasing the volume of trade exchange, as well as in the areas of implementing infrastructure projects, tourism, information and communication technologies, energy, transport and air traffic, banking and military-economic cooperation.

She thanked the Emirates for abstaining in the vote on the admission of so-called Kosovo to Interpol, as well as in the vote on the Srebrenica Declaration, which represents a significant gesture of friendship and understanding towards Serbia.

Nikolic called for the launch of additional joint projects in cooperation with the Government of the Republic of Serbia. She also highlighted a number of problems that pupils and students in Kosovo-Metohija face in their everyday lives, especially during their education, and suggested considering the possibility of launching projects through the Serbian ministries’ support mechanism, for pupils and students.

Ambassador Al Menhali, in addition to the importance of interparliamentary cooperation, paid special attention to the opportunities for improving relations in the areas of digitalization, education, economy and the development of artificial intelligence. It was assessed that there is great scope for improving cooperation through joint initiatives and strategic partnerships.

The officials agreed that this meeting could be a step forward in further strengthening relations between Serbia and the United Arab Emirates, based on mutual support, friendship and planning of concrete steps to build on cooperation, with a special emphasis on intensifying direct contact between the parliamentarians of the two countries.
