Head of PFG with Morocco Meets with Moroccan Ambassador to Serbia

The Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Morocco Tamara Pilipovic met today, at the National Assembly House, with the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco to the Republic of Serbia H.E. Mohammed Amine Belhaj to discuss the traditionally friendly relations between the two countries.

Tamara Pilipovic said it was a pleasure to meet with the Ambassador, pointing out that bilateral relations between the two countries are at a high level and continue to successfully develop and become even stronger through the strengthening of cooperation in areas of common interest. She said that the diplomatic relations, established in 1957, were successfully renewed after some stagnation in 2004 when Serbia withdrew the recognition of Western Sahara.

The Head of the PFG with Morocco thanked Ambassador Belhaj for his country's principled support in the preservation of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and stressed that Serbia's position on Western Sahara is known and unchangeable, which further shows that our two countries are bound together by their respect for international law.

She also thanked the leadership of Morocco for voting against so-called Kosovo’s admission to UNESCO and Interpol.

Pilipovic also highlighted the excellent parliamentary cooperation, evidenced by the mutual visits of the two countries’ heads of parliament and the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2018. Saying that the last parliamentary visit was in 2019, she said she expected that the exchange of visits will continue as soon as the epidemiological situation improves. According to her, there is room and potential for further development of parliamentary cooperation, especially through the cooperation of working bodies and parliamentary friendship groups.

Speaking of economic cooperation, she said that imports are in deficit, that Morocco is doing well on our market, while Serbia is a little weaker in Morocco.

She added that Serbian companies are present in Morocco, such as Hemofarm from Vrsac, Tetrapak, Mostogradnja Belgrade, while Energoprojekt and Hidrotehnika are interested in the Moroccan market.

Pilipovic said that the Republic of Serbia acted responsibly in the fight against the pandemic, that the vaccination process is underway and that four types of vaccine are available to the citizens. She emphasized that Serbia also provided support to the region, enabling people from the region to be vaccinated in our country. She also added that Serbia is one of the few countries that has enabled the vaccination of foreign diplomats. In a very short time, two COVID hospitals were built to take care of COVID-19 patients and provide assistance to the healthcare system, and another COVID hospital is currently being built in Novi Sad. She went on to add that the Republic of Serbia has had the smallest drop in GDP in Europe in 2020, when the entire world was affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Ambassador of Morocco agreed with the Head of the PFG that the relations between the two countries are at a high level and should be based on trust and mutual respect. He confirmed that our two countries are bound by adherence to international law and interests based on the defence of the territorial integrity and mutual support in international organizations. The Ambassador added that Morocco, in addition to voting against Kosovo joining UNESCO and Interpol, also voted against its entry into the World Customs Organization. The intensive cooperation between the two countries is also evidenced by the 16 mutual visits realized since 2017, stressed the Ambassador.

The officials also talked about the "World in Serbia" programme which provided two scholarships for students from Morocco last year and scholarships for six students this year.

At the end of the meeting the Ambassador and PFG Head concluded that the relations between Morocco and Serbia are friendly and sincere and that there is room to expand cooperation in the fields of agriculture, defence, culture, education and economy.
