Gojkovic on 30 June, International Day of Parliamentarism, in Geneva

On 30 June, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic will be taking part in the "Quintet" of Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) leadership, the first in the history of this oldest and biggest international parliamentary organization, the summit of IPU officials, heads of the parliaments that presided over the IPU and Serbia as future host.


The meeting in Geneva is organized to mark 30 June, International Day of Parliamentarism, declared by the United Nations to emphasize the importance of national parliaments and the IPU.

The event also marks the 130th anniversary of the IPU as the oldest international parliamentary organization, founded in 1889 as a small group of parliamentarians dedicated to promoting peace through parliamentary diplomacy and dialogue, which has in the now swelled into a global organization of national parliaments boasting 179 members from around the world.

The meeting in Geneva will focus on the ongoing relevance of the founding values and principles of the IPU 130 years on, results achieved at the previous Assemblies, and actions ahead. The Serbian Assembly Speaker will talk about the coming 141st IPU Assembly in Belgrade, 13-17 October.

In addition to the Serbian Assembly Speaker, the "Quintet" will also be attended by the Chairperson of the Council of the Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation Valentina Matvienko, President of the 137th IPU Assembly in St. Petersburg, Speaker of the Shura Council of Qatar Ahmad Bin Abdulla Bin Zaid Al Mahmoud, President of the 140th IPU Assembly in Doha, IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron and IPU Secretary-General Martin Chungong.
