Gojkovic at Inter-Parliamentary Union Session

Speaking at the 139th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic said that it is the parliaments’ duty to stay in step with the digital age and be ready for modernization, openness and efficient operation, to be able to respond to the demands and challenges of the future.

Speaking at the general debate on “Parliamentary leadership in promoting peace and development in the age of innovation and technological change”, Gojkovic stressed that it is vital that the parliaments, at the moment the world has irrevocably stepped into the era of the fourth industrial revolution, readily welcome the imminent changes in the interest of the society and each individual in it.

Gojkovic said that the IT and digital revolution are a new stage of human development in which the parliaments play a vital role by helping the education systems get ready to train the individual to use the new technologies in the digital economy based on knowledge.

“Serbia has recognized this challenge as a unique opportunity for development and made preparing people for the new digital age one of its priorities”, said Gojkovic.

The Serbian Assembly Speaker said that Serbia looks to the future and is determined to continue to contribute to general development and the maintenance of regional stability, despite the difficulties and obstacles left over from past times of crisis, adding that this goal demands a modern and open parliament as the key institution of any democratic political system.

Gojkovic said that the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 UN Agenda have recognized the importance of advancing scientific research, the industrial sector’s technological potential and innovation, adding that Serbia has developed the parliamentary mechanisms to monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Focus Group set up for this purpose is closely following the Government’s work and is included in defining priorities.
