Gojkovic at IAEA General Conference

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, heading the Serbian delegation to the 62nd Annual Regular Session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in Vienna, stressed that the Republic of Serbia will continue to support the efforts of the global international community to strengthen efficient mechanisms to combat illicit trafficking in nuclear materials and other sources of radiation.

Addressing the General Conference, Gojkovic stressed that the protection of health, the environment and ensuring the proper conditions for the peaceful use of nuclear energy and to secure global peace, prosperity and the well-being of future generations, remain the country’s priority objectives.

Gojkovic said that Serbia has made considerable progress in the area and in a year passed three important relevant laws, among them the Law on the Confirmation of the Additional Protocol for the Application of Safeguards in Connection with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, which is conclusive proof that the country is all for combating nuclear terrorism, highlighting the importance of nuclear safety and raising awareness on the importance of nuclear safety.

Gojkovic said that Serbia had passed the Law on the Confirmation of the Convention on Nuclear Safety and the Law on the Confirmation of the Joint Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste and adopted an Action Plan in Case of an Accident. The Parliament Speaker said that this set the legal grounds to advance and expand the country’s participation in the implementation of nuclear safety measures at the global level.

Gojkovic said that Serbia remains committed to strengthening its national legal and regulatory framework in the field of radiation and nuclear safety, in line with international standards and EU law.
