Gojkovic and Khelifa: Serbia-Algeria Relations Friendly, Economic Cooperation Should be Improved

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic began her official visit to Algeria with a meeting with the Speaker of the Algerian People’s National Assembly Mohamed Larbi Ould Khelifa. The parliament speakers agreed that the two countries have traditionally good and friendly relations and that there is room for further improvement, especially in the sphere of economy.

Gojkovic said that high level visits have contributed to the strengthening of cooperation, that there are no outstanding issues between the two countries and that both are interested in expanding economic cooperation. Gojkovic hopes that the economic relations would soon regain the same high levels as more than twenty years ago.

Khelifa reminded of the long and friendly history of bilateral relations and endorsed the improvement of economic cooperation so that it might reach the level of the overall friendly relations between Serbia and Algeria. He also pointed out that Algeria is aware of the reform processes and economic development in Serbia.

The Algerian Parliament Speaker stressed that the country stands by its decision not to recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija i.e. that it considers Kosovo-Metohija part of Serbia.

Gojkovic thanked Algeria for its principled and consistent stance on the issue, stressing that Serbia is committed to dialogue and implementation of the Brussels Agreement, which is in the interest of the people living in Kosovo-Metohija.

Gojkovic and Khelifa also talked about the improvement of interparliamentary cooperation at the level of working bodies, friendship groups, women’s parliamentary networks, standing delegations at international parliamentary organisations and about supporting intergovernmental cooperation via bilateral agreements.

The parliament speakers of Serbia and Algeria stressed the importance of cooperation in the fight against terrorism, especially since this is a global phenomenon, and discussed a number of international issues.

In the course of the visit, Gojkovic will also be meeting with Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal, President of the Algerian National Council Abdelkader Bensalah, Foreign Minister Ramtan Lamamra and Minister of Relations with the Parliament Tahar Khaoua.
