Gojkovic Visits Cyprus: Support for Important Issues, Cooperation Agreement

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic is visiting Cyprus today, the first visit at the level of head of parliament in the relations between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the House of Representatives of the Republic of Cyprus since 2006.

Gojkovic met with the President of the House of Representatives Demetris Syllouris and the two heads of parliament agreed it is imperative to strengthen interparliamentary dialogue so as to avoid repeating such a long lapse in visits at the highest parliamentary level between the two close states, and to sign a cooperation agreement that will allow for more frequent contacts and cooperation in the areas of European integration, agriculture, energy, defence, culture, as well as between delegations in international institutions and between friendship groups.

Gojkovic and Syllouris stressed that mutual support in important political issues continues to reaffirm the traditionally friendly relations between Serbia and Cyprus.

Gojkovic thanked Cyprus for its consistent stance and support of Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and for voting against Kosovo-Metohija’s UNESCO bid, stressing that the Serbian side is dedicated to dialogue with Pristina, but Pristina needs to apply the mutually agreed solution such as the establishment of an association/community of Serb majority municipalities.

Syllouris assured the Serbian Parliament Speaker that Cyprus will maintain its principled stance on this issue and support Serbia, and will continue to endorse Serbia’s accession to the European Union. The President of the Cypriot House of Representatives also highlighted the importance of Serbia’s participation in the UN mission in Cyprus.

Gojkovic also met with the minister of the Cypriot Council of Ministers Christoforos Fokaides who said that EU enlargement to include the Western Balkans is an important factor of stability and that Serbia, a state that belongs in the European family, should become an EU member as soon as possible.

Gojkovic also met with the members of the Cypriot parliamentary friendship group with Serbia who said that their state and parliament would never stop supporting Serbia’s territorial integrity and are well aware of the difficult position of the Serbian people and churches and monasteries in Kosovo-Metohija.

The National Assembly Speaker will also meet with Archbishop of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus Chrysostomos II.
