Gojkovic Receives Tajik Foreign Minister

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic received the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirodjiddin Muhriddin to discuss advancing parliamentary and overall cooperation between Serbia and Tajikistan.

The National Assembly Speaker opined that the two countries’ parliamentary cooperation is not active enough in view of their 25 years of diplomatic relations, adding that this is an excellent opportunity to open a new chapter in the bilateral relations and promote parliamentary cooperation at all levels, from that of speaker to the levels of working bodies and parliamentary friendship groups, as well as cooperation between national delegations to international organizations. After the coming elections in both countries, the future parliamentary cooperation should be cemented by an agreement and realization of reciprocal visits, Gojkovic said.

Gojkovic thanked Minister Muhriddin for Tajikistan’s principled stance of non-recognition of the unilaterally declared independence of so-called Kosovo and respect for Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as international law.

“We are grateful that Tajikistan is one of the world states that have understanding for the Republic of Serbia, that respect international law, UN decisions, Resolution 1244 and Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. It means a lot to us to have support at the international level by countries that understand that the Kosovo-Metohija issue has set a dangerous precedent and that Serbia remains committed to dialogue as a means of finding a compromise solution that can improve the lives of all the citizens”, said Speaker Gojkovic.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tajikistan Sirodjiddin Muhriddin, in official visit to Serbia, emphasized the importance of parliamentary cooperation for the overall relations between the two states, opining that his visit to Serbia is useful for their advancement. He added that Tajikistan fully understands the issue of so-called Kosovo and will continue to support Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. He also said that in addition to parliamentary cooperation the two countries could develop fruitful cooperation in the spheres of the economy, energy, as well as agriculture and investment.

The officials agreed that there is ample room for cooperation between the two countries, opining that parliamentary diplomacy is an important segment in the advancement of bilateral relations. They exchanged opinions on how to mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations, as well as on environmental protection, climate change and waters and blue economy.

The meeting of Speaker Gojkovic and Minister Muhriddin was also attended by the Head of the PFG with Tajikistan Dragomir J. Karic.
