Gojkovic Opens Exhibition “Together We Win” at National Assembly House

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic opened the exhibition “Together We Win” in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the "Serbian Day" in the United States, 28 July 1918, and on the occasion said that we should remember our shared history as an excellent starting point for the advancement of relations and deepening of the trust and understanding so much needed to resolve the complex problems we are faced with.

Gojkovic said that the purpose of the exhibition is to remember the days when the Serbian flag first flew over the White House in Washington D.C. in honour of the bravery and heroism of the Serbian people, as a symbol of friendship, support and solidarity with the Serbian people who fearlessly fought against a stronger enemy and bore an enormous sacrifice for liberty.

“This was a sign of the deepest respect for the Serbian people, its sacrifice, heroism and victories. The epic suffering borne in World War One, commitment and bravery gracing the most glorious pages of our history, astonished the world as evidenced by the Act of US president W. Wilson”, said Gojkovic.

Gojkovic said that in the two world wars Serbs and Americans fought side by side with the rest of the allies and bore insurmountable selfless sacrifices to defend the ideals of freedom, peace and justice.

“The heroism and sacrifices of our ancestors are an integral part of the Serbian and American history. Today more than ever we need to remember this shared history. It is the best starting point for the advancement of relations and deepening of the trust and understanding so much needed to resolve the complex problems we are faced with”, said Gojkovic.

The Serbian Assembly Speaker said that the principles and values President Wilson stood for are now more important than ever and she is certain that it is in the interest of the Serbian and American people to keep the relations what they were in the times of President Wilson, for which there are no obstacles.
Gojkovic said that setting the grounds for lasting peace, prosperity and stability in the region is a common goal and we are ready to listen to and better understand one another about how best to achieve it.

“Dedication to strengthening the traditional alliance and friendly relations is our common duty to the new generations and to our glorious ancestors to whom we owe a debt of gratitude and respect and whose bravery will never lose its heroic glow”, said Gojkovic.

The exhibition “Together We Win” was organized with the help of the US Embassy in Belgrade and the attending were also addressed by US Ambassador Kyle Scott and Vladimir Ceh, the author of the exhibition.

US Ambassador to Serbia Kyle Scott said that President Woodrow Wilson had ordered that the Serbian flag be hoisted over the White House on 28 July 1918 to celebrate "Serbian Day", which was the first time a foreign flag was flown over the presidential residence.

Ambassador Scott said that Americans of all walks of life had shown support and compassion for the Serbian people from the very onset of World War One and that Serbs and Americans had worked together, supported one another and persevered in the long and hard fight.

“As we celebrate the events from a century ago we must not forget that our values and common history bind us together and keep pushing us forward together to this very day”, said Ambassador Scott.

Speaking of the exhibition, its author Vladimir Ceh said that it is dedicated to friendship and the people who inspired that friendship, because, as he said, friendship, personal and between states, is built and maintained by people.

“If it weren’t for the friendship between Woodrow Wilson and Mihajlo Pupin, a lot would not have come to pass, and surely a hugging Serbian and French soldier would not have called on Americans to save Serbia. There would only have been the poster, in France”, said Ceh.
