Gojkovic Meets with Swedish Parliament Speaker and Foreign Minister

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic continued her official visit to the Kingdom of Sweden today with a meeting with Swedish Parliament Speaker Urban Ahlin and Foreign Minister Margot Wallström.

In the meeting with the Swedish Parliament Speaker, Gojkovic said that Serbia and Sweden have a long tradition of friendly relations and it is in their mutual interest to continue to bolster bilateral relations. Gojkovic and Ahlin deemed the existing parliamentary cooperation excellent and discussed how to further strengthen interparliamentary ties. They opined that the Serbian Parliament Speaker’s visit to Sweden and Speaker Ahlin’s recent visit to Serbia have raised parliamentary cooperation to a higher level. The two parliament speakers also discussed promoting cooperation at the level of committees, especially in the fields of European and foreign affairs, gender equality and environmental protection.

Gojkovic thanked Sweden for its support of Serbia’s European integration process stressing that the country is ready to implement further reforms across the board and to strengthen the institutions, while Ahlin said that Sweden had always had an open-door attitude when it comes to EU enlargement.

In the meeting with the Foreign Minister Gojkovic said that the two countries’ diplomatic cooperation has been going strong for a century now and the anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties and opening of the first Serbian representative office in Stockholm was duly celebrated, stressing that today Serbia and Sweden have a well-developed and intensive political dialogue aimed at fortifying and developing relations even further.

Gojkovic said that Serbia is committed to European integration and dialogue with Pristina, stressing that, four years later, Pristina is yet to establish the agreed upon Community of Serb Municipalities, which is the central part of the Brussels Agreement. Gojkovic stressed that Serbia is all for dialogue and compromise on the Kosovo problem, but that does not mean that one side gets all and the other nothing.

The Swedish Foreign Minister said that the country is a friend to Serbia and in favour of EU enlargement to the Western Balkans, adding that she hoped the coming summit in Sofia would be good and productive. Wallström encouraged Serbia to continue with the reforms and European integration processes which she said are important both for the candidate countries such as Serbia and the EU itself.

On the first day of her visit to Sweden Gojkovic had an audience with the King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf at the Royal Palace in Stockholm and talked with the President of Stockholm City Council Eva-Louise Erlandsson Slorach and the Chair of the Swedish Parliament’s Committee for EU Affairs Jonas Eriksson and the members of the parliamentary body. The National Assembly delegation also included the Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Sweden Dr Milorad Mijatovic.
